Madreselva (cello solo) Armand Coeck

Madreselva, translated freely from Spanish into Mother of the Forest, refers to the dark feminine side, also expressed in occultist figures as Lilith and Kali: she who gives but also who takes life. It is also the name for the Lonicera, well known as the Honeysuckle. In Middle Ages this plant symbolised eternal love.

Armand Coeck composed Madreselva in 1999, but the piece doesn’t sound very contemporary, neither neoromantic nor neoclassical. Its archetypical motives and timeless themes take the listener to ancient times.

Madreselva published by auurk ed. and because Coeck dedicated the piece to me, they asked me to do the bowings and fingerings. Meanwhile I played the piece several times in concert – always Madreselva was received with a huge enthusiasm by the audiences, very unusual for music written nowadays - and I even won a competition performing Madreselva.
